Sir Bobby Robson’s 80th Birthday Bash: Foundation Releases DVD Of Special Night

Filed under: appearances, article, media, news, videos

The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation have released a DVD featuring highlights of the late Sir Bobby’s 80th birthday celebration at The Sage.

‘Another (K)Night to Remember’, features live performances from Russell Watson, Lindisfarne, Joe McElderry and teenage opera star Faryl Smith, as well as a moving interview from Paul Gascoigne.

A star-studded guest list attended the event, which raised £80,000 for the Alan Shearer Foundation and the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

Sir Bobby Robson died in July 2009, aged 76. The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, the charity the former England and Newcastle manager set up in 2008, has so far raised more than £5.2 million to help find more effective ways to detect and treat cancer.

Sir Bobby Robson’s widow, Lady Elsie Robson, said: “We thoroughly enjoyed the celebration of Bob’s birthday. It was a wonderful night and we were surrounded by friends and well-wishers. Bob would have been in his element.

“It was just so special to have gathered together such a wonderful line-up of performers and football people. And to have raised so much money for charity too, really I’m just blown away.

“It says a lot about the commitment of everyone involved in the organisation of the night, the generosity of the sponsors Virgin Money and the people who gave up time to appear, that it all ran so smoothly.

“People are still talking about it now and I’m sure the DVD will be very popular.”

SPECTACLE wearers vying to become the face of a nationwide optician chain were treated to a guest appearance by a South Tyneside singing star.

Joe McElderry called into the Specsavers store in King Street, South Shields, on Friday, to wish contestants entering its Spectacle Wearer of the Year contest “good luck”.

The singing star, who will be appearing at this year’s Soundwaves event, at Bents Park in August, was also handed a pair of sunglasses as an early birthday present.

The competition, open to all spectacle wearers aged 16 and over, will also help raise money for anti-bullying charity Kidscape.

Joe said: “The competition is a fantastic idea as it helps take away the stigma of wearing glasses.

“Having this competition helps to make wearing glasses more fashionable and cool.

“I’m really pleased to be here to meet some of the entrants and to help launch the Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.

“Specsavers have also kindly given me a pair of sunglasses as an early birthday present.”

The competition, being run by all Specsavers stores across the country, is on the lookout for the ultimate spectacle wearer.

The contest is open to anyone over the age of 16, with judging and regional photocalls taking place across the summer.

The finalists will then be invited to a star-studded awards ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London, where former Spice Girl Mel C will be appearing.

The overall winner will also win a two-week all-inclusive holiday to St Lucia with £250 spending money and new designer glasswear from Specsavers.

Samantha Stewart, spokeswoman for Specsavers, said: “The competition is a great way to take the stigma away from wearing glasses.

“We are calling on people to be proud of being a glasses wearer and to enter our competition.

“We have had a brilliant response so far in South Shields to the competition, with a lot of entries.

“And it was nice some of those entrants have had the chance to meet Joe McElderry in the store.”

To enter the competition pick up a leaflet from a Specsavers store or upload a photo to facebook.com/specsavers or specsavers.co.uk/loveglasses
