Joe proud of his new album

The brand new Joe McElderry album is out this week.

Joe’s fourth studio album “Here’s What I Believe” features new songs co-written by Joe and interpretations of songs including Whitney Houston’s I Look to You, Something’s Gotten Hold of my Heart and Queen’s Love of my Life.

Joe has spent this week promoting the album and rehearsing for two live shows next week, in London and Newcastle as well as preparing for Sunday’s Great North Run.

Joe spoke to me about the new material and also revealed his thoughts on the subject of online ‘trolling’ and Cheryl’s return to the X Factor.

Just don’t expect to wear Lady Gaga’s meat dress any day soon.

Gaydar Radio interview

The lovely Joe McElderry chats about recording his new album, touring, X Factor and whether Simon Cowell is a friend or foe.

Tell us a bit more about your current single ‘Here’s What I Believe’. This is one of the songs that you’ve co-written on the album – what inspired you to write it?
‘Here’s What I Believe’ is about relationships and I co-wrote it with Marcella Detroit from Shakespeare’s Sister. I wanted to write a feel good break up song.

You’re soon to release your fourth studio album. What was it like to record? Any moments in particular that stood out for you?
The whole process was exciting! My first time songwriting so it was totally different. It’s an experience I’ll keep for a long time.

You released two albums since winning Popstar To Operastar, does this album mark the start of a new musical direction for you?
It is a different direction. I wanted to show my growth as an artist.

Do you have a funny/crazy tour story to share with us?
I nearly choked on a piece of dust whilst I was performing on stage but like a trooper I got to the end of the song before running off stage to be sick!

People have often commented that you would be well suited to being a West End star. Musically, where do you see yourself fitting in the most?
I don’t like to put myself in a box and I like to try different styles. Whatever I do I try to be the best.

When you look back on your time on the X Factor now – what comes to mind?
It was an amazing experience and a time I’ll never forget. It was so special and I learned so much not only as an artist but as a person.

Are you still in touch with any of the others from your series of the X Factor?
Yeah, we speak and text to each other a lot but it’s difficult to meet up as we all have busy schedules.

Simon Cowell – friend/foe or both?
Friend.

Besides yourself, who has been your favourite contestant/winner of X Factor so far and why?
I love Leona and Alexandra – both have incredible voices.

When you’re gay and famous – do you think it makes a big difference to the type of attention you get and the type of guys that approach you?
I don’t really pay attention to it. I don’t see myself as being famous. I’m just myself and enjoy myself.

What do you look for in an ideal partner?
Someone who is genuine.

What lessons – if any – have you learnt as an openly gay artist?
Just to be myself. As long as you are happy that’s all that matters.

So, do you ever hit the gay clubs on a night out?
I go to all different clubs so yes, I sometimes hit the gay clubs.

“I don’t like to put myself in a box and I like to try different styles. Whatever I do I try to be the best.”

What comes first for you – sex or love?
Love.

When the phone rings – who do you hope is calling?
Someone I want to talk to!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
You can’t be everyone’s cup of tea so please the people who want to be pleased.

Joe’s new album Here’s What I Believe is out on 10 September.
