JOE McElderry fans braved freezing temperatures overnight to be first in line to meet the pint-sized pop star. And among his legion of fans, who camped out through the night from 6pm yesterday, was 75-year-old Betty Rounthwaite, from South Shields, and 14-year-old Chloe Woodcock, who travelled 250 miles from Scotland to see her idol. Grandmother-of-two Betty, from Laygate, tried to meet Joe when he signed copies of his debut single The Climb at HMV in King Street, South Shields, last December – but missed out when thousands turned up. And she was determined not to miss out when he announced he was coming back to the borough for his album launch. She said: “I wasn’t taking any chances this time and was willing to camp out all night. “I just have to see him. I think he’s great. I’ve got all his pictures and I tape him when he’s on the TV – I think I’m obsessed with him! “This is maybe my last chance I get to see him, and I just thought I’ve got to take it. It was freezing last night, but he’s worth it!” Chloe travelled from Helensburgh – about 30 miles north of Glasgow – with mum Julie and younger sister Lauren, eight, who was the youngest fan in the queue first thing this morning. Julie, 45, said: “Chloe’s a big fan. All she wanted this year for Christmas is to meet Joe. “We’ve driven 250 miles and sat in the cold – I must be mad, but there’s been a lovely atmosphere, with everyone talking and singing.” Chloe added: “I saw him at the X Factor tour at Glasgow, and I just cried. I’ve cried non-stop since my mum told me she would bring me here.” Mavis Maughan, event co-ordinator at the Coronation Street store, said: “I think it’s just fantastic so many people have come out to support Joe. “There’s such a wide variety of people, from the borough, region and country and from as old as 75 to as young as eight. We’re expecting thousands today, and I hope people show him how much support he has.” |
